Water Wells

The need to bring water to the people of Nigeria, especially the Fulani, was identified by Dr. Goen while he was working as a missionary with the Fulani people. After the formation of HELP, the drilling of water wells was identified as one of the primary goals to help save lives, as well as show the love of Christ to the Fulani people.Without water wells, people are forced to collect water from handdug holes in the ground (pictured right).

Water wells (bore holes) are the only source of water in the bush and most smaller cities in Nigeria.

Facts:

  • Water related illnesses and death, due to the lack of water and/or clean water, is a major problem in these areas
  • Dehydration and Malaria are two of the leading causes of death among Nigerians
  • It is not uncommon for the Fulani to resort to walking 10 miles or more to find any kind of water, much less drinkable water
  • Many times it takes an entire day for a Fulani woman to fetch a 5 gallon bucket of water from a hand dug hole in the ground (pictured on the back)

Depending on the location of the water well, each individual well can be utilized by an average of 6,000 Fulani people. In the bush, we are drilling our wells centralized around several Fulani encampments, thereby reaching as many Fulani people as possible.

Cost:

Each individual water well costs $5,000.00 US dollars. This price is a "turn key" price, meaning everything is included. Due to the successful working relationship with our contractor, he charges HELP the same fixed price of $5,000.00 US dollars whether we require a hand pump or a submersible pump.

Every dollar donated specifically for water wells goes toward the drilling of a well. Not one penny goes toward administrative costs or any other expense because our ministry budget (salaries, operating expenses, etc.) is paid by a private foundation.

For donations of $5,000.00, we are able to dedicate water wells to the individual(s), organization or name of your choice. A plaque is inscribed with your specified wording and placed on that water well.

Drilling:

Our water wells are drilled by an independent Nigerian contractor. He communicates directly with our Nigerian HELP staff for possible well locations, drilling dates and so forth. This contractor owns two drilling rigs and employs his own seismologist. Depending on the time of the year, location and type of well (i.e. hand pump vs. submersible pump), it takes anywhere from 3-7 days to install a well. Most of our water wells require hand pumps because there is no electricity in the bush.
